Introduction:

Chemical Equilibrium

Equilibrium is defined as the balance between the forward and reverse rates of a reaction.

The formula for the Equilibrium Constant, is:

Keq = [product] / [reactant][reactant]

The reaction in this lab is Fe3+ + SCN- <--> FeSCN2+

The Keq = [FeSCN2+] / [SCN-][Fe3+]

In this lab, the concentrations of reactants will be known, and the product concentrations will be determined by using the spectrophotometer.
